Toxicology Symposium

Thursday, January 21, 2016

Three experts will travel to Oklahoma State University’s Center for Veterinary Health Sciences to share their latest research about complex issues related to chemical toxicity at the Interdisciplinary Toxicology Symposium. The symposium will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 27, beginning at 1 p.m. in McElroy Hall Auditorium located at the corner of West Farm Road and McFarland on the OSU Stillwater campus.

“Understanding how chemicals move in the environment, influence biology and ecology and more requires expertise in chemical, physical and life science disciplines,” explains Carey Pope, PhD, Regents Professor and Sitlington Chair in Toxicology at the veterinary center. “The Interdisciplinary Toxicology Program at Oklahoma State was developed to bring experts from agriculture, engineering, human and veterinary medicine, forensic science, and toxicology together to address complex issues related to chemical toxicity.”

This year’s symposium features three experts from around the country who will share their expertise in diverse but related fields. In addition, seven graduate Fellows in the Interdisciplinary Toxicology Program will make presentations on their research.

Ayusman Sen, PhD, will present “Self-powered enzyme pumps for detecting and reacting with specific toxicants.” Sen is a distinguished professor of chemistry at Pennsylvania State University and a Fellow of both the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Royal Society of Chemistry.

Peter Goering, PhD (pictured above), will present the 16th Annual Sitlington Lecture in Toxicology. His topic is “In vitro tissue-materials interactions assessment of nanostructured surfaces for medical device applications.” Goering is deputy director of the Division of Biology, Chemistry and Materials Science at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. He is a past president of the Academy of Toxicological Sciences and is current president of the Society of Toxicology, the largest scientific organization of toxicologists in the world.

George Cobb, PhD, will present “Identifying, assessing and managing contaminants of emerging concern.” Cobb is a professor and chair of the Department of Environmental Science at Baylor University. He is a Fellow of the American Chemical Society and is an internationally recognized environmental chemist who applies those skills to address toxicant movement in the environment.

The Interdisciplinary Toxicology Symposium is open to the public at no charge. With the information promised by the above experts and the seven graduate Fellows, attendees will hear a variety of presentations on chemicals that affect humans, animals and the environment in which we live.
