OSU to Host Interdisciplinary Toxicology Symposium

Oklahoma State University’s Center for Veterinary Health Sciences will host the Interdisciplinary Toxicology Symposium on Tuesday, Feb. 21, from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the center’s McElroy Hall Auditorium. McElroy Hall is located on the corner of West Farm Road and McFarland on OSU’s Stillwater campus. The symposium is open to the public at no charge.
Expertise in chemical, physical, and life science disciplines is necessary to understand how chemicals move through and are modified in the environment, how they are absorbed into organisms to influence biology and ecology, and how they may be detected or quantified in environmental or biological samples. OSU’s Interdisciplinary Toxicology Program (ITP) was developed to bring agriculture, engineering, human and veterinary medicine, forensic science, and toxicology experts together to address complex issues related to chemical toxicity.
The Interdisciplinary Toxicology Symposium invites national experts to share their work in diverse but related fields. The symposium includes presentations from graduate Fellows in the Interdisciplinary Toxicology Program. This year three guest speakers will be hosted.
The one day symposium will feature the following:
- Poster session from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. – open to undergraduate and graduate students with ongoing toxicology-related research projects

ITP Fellows presentations from 1 p.m. to 2:55 p.m.
- Tim Anderson – Comparative in vivo toxicity of chlorpyrifos oxon in mice and toads
- Christopher Goodchild – In vitro toxicity of crude oil in avian erythrocytes
- Sarah Hileman – Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon accumulation in soil receiving rooftop runoff
- William Mimbs – Dermal uptake of organic contaminants by amphibians: location and hydrophobicity
- Ana Chicas-Mosier – The effects of ingested aqueous aluminum on floral fidelity and foraging strategy in honey bees (Apis mellifera)
- Kirstin Poindexter – Comparative kinetics of inhibition of free and nanocomplexed butyrylcholinesterase
- Kendall Scarlett – Development of a behavioral assay to test pesticide toxicity in amphibians
- Phil Kemp, Ph.D., will present “Postmortem forensic toxicology investigations in aviation accidents” from 3 p.m. to 3:40 p.m.
- Paul Mohai, Ph.D., will present “Environmental justice and the Flint water crisis” from 3:45 p.m. to 4:25 p.m.
- Kevin Crofton, Ph.D. (pictured above), will present the 17th Annual Sitlington Lecture in Toxicology “The Evolution of Toxicology and Chemical Regulation” from 4:30 p.m. to 5:15 p.m.
If you are unable to attend, the presentations can be seen live on O State TV starting at 1 p.m.
Following the final speaker, awards will be given for Best Posters in both the undergraduate and graduate categories. The Interdisciplinary Toxicology Symposium is hosted by Carey Pope, Ph.D., Regents Professor and Sitlington Chair in Toxicology at OSU’s Center for Veterinary Health Sciences.
