Organophosphates: Why They Matter

Organophosphates: Why They Matter

Thursday, February 1, 2018

Organophosphates are chemicals found in many insecticides and highly toxic nerve agents. The United States Environmental Protection Agency lists organophosphates as very highly and acutely toxic to bees, wildlife and humans. Continuing concern for use of organophosphate nerve agents by rogue nations and terrorists, along with the toxicity of organophosphate insecticides to humans, animals and the environment, means that these compounds pose very real public health and environmental problems.

Dr. Marion Ehrich will present the 18th Annual Sitlington Lecture in Toxicology, “Organophosphates—Past, Present and Future Uses and Toxicities,” to talk about issues surrounding organophosphate toxicity. Ehrich has MS, RPh, and PhD degrees and is a professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology in the Department of Biomedical Sciences and Pathobiology at the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine in Blacksburg, Va. She is the co-director of the Laboratory for Neurotoxicity Studies at Virginia Tech.

Her presentation will be on Monday, Feb. 19, at 4:30 p.m. in McElroy Hall Auditorium located at the corner of West Farm Road and McFarland on the Oklahoma State University Stillwater campus. The presentation is open to the public at no charge and will be streamed live at www.ostate.tv/live

Dr. Carey Pope, Regents Professor and Sitlington Chair in Toxicology and Interdisciplinary Toxicology Program Director at Oklahoma State University’s Center for Veterinary Health Sciences, is hosting the lecture. The Sitlington Lecture in Toxicology is part of the annual Interdisciplinary Toxicology Program (ITP) Symposium. The symposium begins with a poster session where undergraduate and graduate students along with ITP fellows present their research. Each fellow then presents his or her work in brief platform presentations, followed by two environmental toxicology presentations from internationally recognized experts.

Dr. Bryan Brooks, Distinguished Professor in the Department of Environmental Science at the Institute of Biomedical Studies and the director of Environmental Health Science at Baylor University, will present “Urbanization, Environment and Pharmaceuticals: Advancing Comparative Physiology, Pharmacology and Toxicology.” Dr. Nancy Denslow, Professor of Toxicology in the Department of Physiological Sciences and Center for Environmental and Human Toxicology at the University of Florida, will present, “Lipidomics: Another OMIC Technology”. The Sitlington Lecture in Toxicology will follow these presentations.
