Ramsey honored with Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Advising and Mentoring

Thursday, May 30, 2019

Jon Ramsey, associate professor in the department of agricultural education, communications and leadership at Oklahoma State University, was recognized with the Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Advising and Mentoring at this spring’s College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources Scholarships and Awards Banquet.

The award recognizes and promotes exceptional undergraduate advising and mentoring.

“As a former ag teacher himself, Dr. Ramsey understands the importance of agricultural education in public schools,” said Cynda Clary, associate dean of academic programs for the college. “He is dedicated to training committed, quality teachers who will make an impact in the classroom.”

Ramsey joined the department in 2002 and currently advises approximately 90 undergraduate students, in addition to students pursing an agricultural education emphasis in other majors.

He plays a unique and vital advising role in the department as he has coordinated the student teaching program for agricultural education students each semester for a number of years.

Additionally, Ramsey serves as the advisor of Collegiate FFA where he has guided CFFA through numerous volunteerism and professional development activities benefiting Oklahoma FFA members.

“The time and effort Ramsey dedicates to his students is a model of service and leadership,” said Rob Terry, head of the department of agricultural education, communications and leadership. “His enthusiasm and dedication to help others makes him an outstanding advisor and inspires our students to practice the same traits when they work with young people in their career.”

Ramsey has served as the agricultural education advisor chair for a number of years and was recently selected by faculty to serve in that capacity for all three undergraduate programs in the department.

“For me, I strive to be a ‘lifelong’ learner and take advantage of professional development to inform my practice regarding advisement and strive to use advising as a service to those students who are searching for their place in the college or who have identified agricultural education as their college major and career choice,” he said.

Students praise Ramsey for his dedication to them, which goes beyond time in his classroom.

“Even today, during my fifth year of teaching, Dr. Ramsey and I still meet several times during the school year and he provides me with advice and assistance on any issues that I face as an educator,” a former student said. “Dr. Ramsey did not simply view me as a student in his class, but instead a professional that he could help to become successful.”
