Oklahoma Gardening kicks off new season Feb. 15

Oklahoma gardeners who are ready to get back in the gardening groove can get started soon as new episodes of OETA’s popular television program Oklahoma Gardening resume airing.
Kim Toscano, host of Oklahoma Gardening, said there will be many new and educational topics in store for viewers during the show’s 41st season this year.
“We always strive to make the show appealing to both novice gardeners and seasoned growers and this year is no exception,” Toscano said. “Viewers who may be new to gardening will find our segments on building a garden from the ground up very informative, while we continue to provide research-based information for those who already have a little dirt under their fingernails.”
For those with a penchant for growing vegetables, the show will feature sustainable gardening techniques. Plantings will include many unique crops such as Belgian endive and Romanesco. Toscano said they will kick off the growing season with a series of segments focusing on growing vegetables under low tunnels.
“This method of gardening will help extend the growing season for a variety of vegetables. Other unconventional growing systems will include production of microgreens, sprouts and hydroponics,” she said. “Last season we started a new monthly segment called Turf Talk. It was so well received by viewers we are going to continue with it this season. These special segments will again feature members of Oklahoma State University’s turf team who will highlight a wide variety of turf-related topics.”
Other show topics will include attracting and protecting native pollinators, water garden renovation and backyard foraging, as well as featuring specialists from OSU in a pecan series.
The Oklahoma Gardening crew will continue the tradition of traveling within the state. Travel plans this season will take the show to south central Oklahoma where they will visit home gardens, feature unique horticultural businesses and highlight native plant material.
“We’re really looking forward to a great season,” Toscano said.
Oklahoma Gardening airs every Saturday morning at 11 a.m. and at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday afternoons on local OETA channels. Oklahoma Gardening will air new episodes Feb. 15-16 and Feb. 22-23 before going on hiatus for OETA’s fundraising festival. Oklahoma Gardening will return March 22.
