OSU to host Wildlife Food Plot Day July 12 in Slaughterville

Landowners wanting to get a firsthand look at how they can enhance wildlife habitat on their properties should RSVP now to attend Oklahoma State University’s Wildlife Food Plot Day July 12 in Slaughterville.

Sponsored by the Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service in cooperation with several state and national seed companies, the 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday event will make several acres of wildlife food plots available for public viewing, in addition to interactive discussions with experts about best management practices and products.

“Single species along with multiple seed blends will be on display,” said Heath Herje, OSU Cooperative Extension agricultural educator for Cleveland County. “These will include Sunn Hemp, guar, millets, lablab, cowpeas, mungbeans, Egyptian wheat and forage soybeans, among others.”

Directions are as follows: From the Shamrock Station at State Highway 77 and Slaughterville Road, located just south of the community of Noble, travel 4.6 miles east on Slaughterville Road, where participants should see a white OSU sign on the north side of the road.

“This will be the second year we’ve hosted the event and we will again have drawings to give away food plot seed from several companies,” Herje said. “Attracting wildlife provides a great many benefits, including greater land value, financial incentives relative to hunting lease revenue and ecotourism for recreation and wildlife photography.”

The Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service is one of two state agencies that are part of OSU’s Division of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, along with the Oklahoma Agricultural Experiment Station system.
