Oklahoma State University’s Division of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources is hosting an Oct. 10 field day detailing the impact of land application of urban horizontal directional drilling mud.
The field day will take place at 10:30 a.m. on the OSU Vegetable Research Station near Bixby, located at 13711 S. Mingo Rd. There is no cost to attend and lunch will be provided. However, to ensure sufficient numbers of meals are on hand, participants are asked to RSVP prior to the event by emailing deana.titus@okstate.edu or by calling 405-744-6420.
“Drilling mud is the material created for the purpose of drilling oil and natural gas wells,” said Chad Penn, DASNR associate professor of soil and environmental chemistry. “Many agricultural producers have opportunities to provide their property as disposal sites for drilling mud applications and receive payment in return.”
Most producers will have the material applied to pasture or rangeland that has a relatively low production capability.
“Depending on many factors, the land application of drilling mud may or may not inhibit future production,” he said. “We will be sharing the latest information to assist producers in making the most knowledgeable decisions regarding their specific operations.”
To get to the Bixby research station from the Creek Turnpike, travel south on South Memorial Drive (Highway 64) for 3.5 miles, then turn east on East 131st Street and travel one mile to South Mingo Road. Turn south onto South Mingo Road and travel 0.6 mile. The OSU Vegetable Research Station is on the east side of the road.
