Dig into soil at backyard composting class at Stillwater Public Library

Monday, July 20, 2015

Local gardeners and conservationists who would like to learn more about backyard composting can attend an informative workshop at the Stillwater Public Library.

Slated July 21, this event is free and open to the public and will feature an easy-to-follow overview of composting. Lynn Malley, Oklahoma State University Cooperative Extension assistant specialist for the Solid Waste Management Program, will present workshop at 6:30 p.m. The Stillwater Public Library is located at 1107 S. Duck.

“There are many reasons our community members should start composting,” Malley said. “Backyard composting is a great way to help the environment. In return, you get amazing soil that works well in your garden and yard and is beneficial in times of drought.”

According to Malley, landfills typically contain about 40 percent organic matter. A large percentage of that matter could easily have been reused in composting.

Why aren’t more people composting?

“By far, people’s biggest fear is the compost bin producing odors and attracting bugs and animals,” she said. “But none of that will happen if you compost the right way, which is what I will teach you.”

Malley will talk about the various equipment needed, how to manage the bin, including which foods can be used, how to deal with composting problems and what to do with the compost produced.

“The soil that results from composting is especially good at absorbing moisture,” Malley said. “During times of drought, the sponge-like nature of compost helps the soil retain rain and irrigation, so much less water trickles away to waste.”

Refreshments will be provided and will be used to demonstrate which types of leftover foods are appropriate for composting.

“Backyard Composting” is free and open to the public. Registration is available online at http://library.stillwater.org and at the Help Desk at askalibrarian@stillwater.org or (405) 372-3633 x8106.

Library hours are Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Sunday 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
