Opportunity to learn about organic farming

Thursday, May 14, 2015

In an effort to help Oklahomans gain a better understanding of sustainable and organic production, Oklahoma State University Cooperative Extension is partnering with OSU/OKC to present Organic Farm Tour 2015.

Slated June 18-19, this tour will explore several certified organic farms around central Oklahoma and give insight to what it takes for a farm to become organically certified.

Lynn Malley, OSU Cooperative Extension assistant state specialist, solid waste management programs, said the tour is geared toward anyone with an interest in organic production.

“The owner of each of the farms we’re scheduled to visit in Oklahoma will give participants a tour and explain the process they went through to become organically certified for what they produce in their operation,” Malley said.

The first stop on the tour will be The Living Kitchen in Bristow where they will take part in a certified organic diversified farm tour. The group will then travel to Slick to visit Fisher’s Produce. The group will then board the bus and continue the tour at a sustainable aquaponics facility in Langston before returning to Oklahoma City.

The second day of the tour will start at Crestview Farm in Edmond before heading to Arcadia to visit the historic Arcadia Round Barn. The tour will conclude with visits to Sun Rise Acres in Bridge Creek and Berry Creek Farm in Blanchard.

“While on the tour, participants will have a chance to see everything from organic fruit and vegetable production to goat sausage and cheese snacks,” Malley said. “There is something for everyone.”

A $25 registration fee covers transportation, lunches and lodging. Space is limited to 50 participants, so interested persons are encouraged to register now. To register, please contact Cross Timbers RC&D at crosstimbersrcd@gmail.com. This event is sponsored by Southern Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education.
