Faculty Spotlight: Dr. David Lalman

Tuesday, July 12, 2016

Dr. David Lalman has served as an extension beef cattle specialist for Oklahoma State University since 1996. Some of his responsibilities include developing a statewide educational program in beef cattle nutrition and management with emphasis on beef production systems. His extension and research programs focus on increasing beef production system profitability and improving product quality through improved nutritional and management strategies.

“Since childhood, I have had a strong interest in cattle and land stewardship,” said Dave. “I essentially let my passion for those areas direct my post-secondary education and my career path.

Dave partners with Dr. Damona Doye to coordinate the Master Cattleman Program and the Oklahoma Beef Cattle Manual (http://agecon.okstate.edu/cattleman/). He has given 651 in-state extension presentations, as well as 59 national and international presentations, and can often be seen speaking about beef cattle on the show SUNUP. Dave knows that implementing technology into extension and research is important. During his time at OSU, he has assisted in producing more than 67 television and YouTube videos on cattle nutrition and management, as well as five computer software programs. Dave has published more than 56 peer reviewed journal articles, 87 abstracts, 71 research progress reports, 79 extension publications and 61 proceedings articles.

“Extension is important because we have no agenda,” said Dave. “Extension personnel provide science-based information and let the stakeholders make their own decisions based on the information that we can access or provide.”

Dave has been recognized with an American Society of Animal Science Extension Award (2013), Tyler Award (2002), National Association of County Agriculture Agents Communication Award (2005), Outstanding State Specialist (2000) and Outstanding Group Award for the Oklahoma Quality Beef Network (2003). He has received more than $5,318,695.54 in grants and contracts. He recently served as President of the American Society of Animal Science (Southern Section) and has been active in the Oklahoma Agricultural Extension Agents Association and the Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Association.

As part of his extension duties, he organizes beef cattle events. One of the events that he has coming up is the 2016 Advanced Cow/Calf Camp, June 6-8 (www.osucowcamp.okstate.edu). He will also be a speaker at the 2016 Beef Improvement Federation Convention, June 14 – 17.
