Floriculture workshop slated July 14 in Stillwater

Do your roses have rose rosette disease? Are you interested in learning more about soilless growing media? Would you like to learn about greenhouse and garden center runoff management? Perhaps commercial organic horticulture is right up your alley.

If you are a greenhouse or garden center professional, or simply a plant hobbyist, and would like to learn more about these topics, and much more, make plans now to attend a workshop in the Shackelford Lecture Series.

Slated July 14, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Wes Watkins Center on the Oklahoma State University campus in Stillwater, the Current Challenges in Floriculture workshop will provide attendees with information about current challenges and solutions as they pertain to ornamental plant production and marketing, said Mike Schnelle, OSU Cooperative Extension floriculture specialist.

“We have a number of knowledgeable state and industry specialists who will be on hand to share their expertise in a variety of topics,” Schnelle said. “We’re excited about the great information that will be shared in the second Shackelford Lecture Series. This lecture series began last year as a way for us to honor Charles and Linda Shackelford, previous owners of TLC Garden Center in Oklahoma City, and their many contributions over the years to the Oklahoma greenhouse industry.”

Topics on the lecture series agenda include battling rose rosette disease, rapid diagnostic tests, soilless growing media, commercial organic horticulture, greenhouse and garden center runoff management, removing pesticides from container nursery runoff, and greenhouse structures and equipment integration.

“This lecture series is chocked full of tips, strategies and general information that is beneficial to greenhouse and garden center professionals, as well as the home gardener,” Schnelle said. “We’re looking forward to a great turnout for this Shackelford Lecture Series workshop.”

A $25 registration fee includes lunch and must be postmarked by July 5. No late registrations or walk-ins will be accepted.
