The Botanic Garden at OSU perfect place for yoga and relaxation
Tuesday, April 5, 2016
The Botanic Garden at Oklahoma State University has long been known for its beautiful flowers and landscape. This appealing setting can be the background for Stillwater area residents who are looking for a way to unwind after a long day.
Beginning April 7 and running each Thursday evening through May 26, citizens are encouraged to come participate in Yoga in the Garden. The weekly yoga sessions will take place from 5:45 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Yoga in the Garden is free and is sponsored by OSU’s Department of Wellness and the Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service.
Laura Payne, events coordinator for The Botanic Garden at OSU, said she is excited to partner with the OSU Wellness Center and the Healthiest Campus Initiative to offer this activity free to the community again this year.
“We’ve had great participation in the Yoga in the Garden program for the last couple of years and the feedback has been very positive, so we knew we wanted to offer this opportunity again,” Payne said. “Not only will participants have an opportunity to relax after a long day at work, it also gives the public yet another opportunity to come out and enjoy the peaceful setting of the garden. The garden is really taking shape for the season and we’re anxious for everyone to come see it.”
The yoga sessions will be taught by a local yoga therapist and are open to beginners, as well as those who have been practicing for a while. Each session will incorporate a short centering practice, gentle yoga stretches and guided relaxation. Sessions will take place on the east side of the Display Gardens.
“Outdoor yoga invites a new dimension to a person’s yoga experience. It links nature, humanity and the universe through your contact with the sun, soil and fresh air,” Payne said. “This outdoor experience enhances the energy into the body.”
Participants will need to bring their own yoga mat. They also may want to bring sunscreen, water, insect repellent and a small hand towel.
Please see The Botanic Garden at Oklahoma State University’s Facebook page for weather cancellations. In the event of rain, yoga will take place in the Educational Building at the garden. For additional information, contact Payne at 405-744-4531.
