Pecan Fall Field Day slated Sept. 22

Tuesday, September 12, 2017

Those already in the pecan growing business, along with those who are interested in growing pecans, can take a first-hand look at what it takes to operate a pecan business during the upcoming Pecan Fall Field Day.

Slated Sept. 22 at Knight Creek Farms, 18400 S. 129 W. Ave, Sapulpa, this opportunity is free and open to seasoned and novice growers. The field day will include a dinner sponsored by Grissom John Deere. Registration is required and can be completed by contacting Stephanie Larimer at 405-744-5404 or via email at stephanie.larimer@okstate.edu. On the day of the event, registration begins at 2 p.m. and dinner will be served at 6 p.m.

Becky Carroll, Oklahoma State University Cooperative Extension assistant specialist, fruit crops and pecans, said there are several informative topics on the agenda that will be of interest to those in attendance.

“The pecan industry continues to flourish in Oklahoma, and workshops such as this help ensure growers get the latest research-based information available to make their pecan orchards as prosperous as possible,” Carroll said. “The specialists we have lined up for this workshop are very knowledgeable and eager to share information with growers and potential growers.”

Speakers include Dwight Luther, Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation game warden; Phil Mulder, professor and department head, OSU Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology; Mike Spradling, president, Oklahoma Pecan Growers Association; and Bob Knight and Daniel Knight, owners of Knight Creek Farms.

Agenda topics include early harvest/pecan drying operation, row harvesting demonstration, wildlife management options, irrigation design and management and pecan weevil monitoring.

From Highway 117 in Sapulpa, go six miles south on S. Hickory Street, turn right on W. 181st St. South. Signs will direct participants to the orchard.
