Student spotlight: Justin Leonard

Friday, March 17, 2017

Justin Leonard, ag communications and animal science junior, has already made his mark at OSU.
Leonard, originally from Eudora, KS, grew up across the street from his grandpa’s farm. When he wasn’t helping out on the farm, he was exhibiting hogs and steers at shows around his home state. He enjoyed taking hogs to World Pork Expo annually as well.

Leonard currently holds leadership positions as the Swine Club's president, Agricultural Communicators of Tomorrow's treasurer, and he is an active Block and Bridle member. He has also worked at the swine unit since his freshman year, and assists with major hog shows across Oklahoma, including Tulsa, Duncan and Oklahoma Youth Expo.
When asked why he chose to pursue an education at OSU, Leonard said he loved the “friendship-type” network and personable professors.

“I really liked the people and atmosphere,” Leonard said.” “Those two coupled, to me, make the perfect learning environment.”

Leonard plans to stay involved with agriculture regardless of where his career takes him. He said he would love to stay within the communications or public policy realm.

A couple of fun facts about Leonard are: he loves jazz music and exploring new places, especially if he can see new sites through the lens of his camera.

His servant leadership, eagerness to learn, and positive personality are hard to miss. If you have the chance to meet Leonard in class, at the swine unit, or at a hog show, be sure to say hi and meet a wonderful student of the animal science department.
