Giles honored with Excellence in Graduate Student Advising and Mentoring Award

Kris Giles, regent’s professor in the department of entomology and plant pathology at Oklahoma State University, was recognized with the Excellence in Graduate Student Advising and Mentoring Award at the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources Scholarships and Awards Banquet March 29.

STILLWATER, Okla. – Kris Giles, regent’s professor in the department of entomology and plant pathology at Oklahoma State University, was recognized with the Excellence in Graduate Student Advising and Mentoring Award at the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources Scholarships and Awards Banquet March 29.

The award recognizes and promotes exceptional graduate advising and mentoring.

“Dr. Giles is an enthusiastic mentor who is dedicated to his graduate students’ development and success in their individual goals,” said Cynda Clary, CASNR associate dean of academic programs. “He provides his students the skill set they need to be successful and pushes them to be independent. He challenges them to use the knowledge and experience they gain while at OSU to develop into impactful scientists who can make contributions to their field of knowledge.”

Since he began his work at OSU in 1997, Giles has advised 10 master’s students and six doctoral students, served on 44 graduate student committees and supervised eight postdoctoral fellows.

“He epitomizes the consummate professional in guiding, directing, and even frustrating his graduate students to the point of effectively teaching them what life is like outside the campus environment,” said Phillip Mulder, department head of entomology and plant pathology.

Giles engages his students in his research providing them the opportunity work with growers, connect with industry representatives, and communicate with the general public about integrated pest management concepts and their agricultural applications.

“My mentoring philosophy is based primarily on techniques that help guide students through the transition towards successful defense and ultimately graduation,” Giles said.

Giles’ mentorship continues long after his students complete their degrees. As stated by a former student, “He played the single largest role in my success as a graduate student and continues to provide superior guidance for me and countless others.”
