Oklahoma Recycling Conference slated Sept. 20

The Oklahoma Recycling Association will host a full-day conference and expo at Oklahoma State University.
This year’s theme is Recycling Avengers: Keeping it Green and Clean. The conference is slated Sept. 20, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the Conoco/Phillips Alumni Center on the OSU campus.
Local government officials, recycling professionals, community and business leaders, educators, students and Oklahoma residents interested in the business of recycling or expanding local programs are welcome.
Attendees will hear from speakers Dylan de Thomas, of the Recycling Partnership, who will deliver his keynote address, “Improving Residential Recycling.” In addition, Tom Mills, of Greenshortz Media, will present tips on using short, customized videos to help community members recycle correctly.
Other topics on the program include recycling in Oklahoma and strategies for education and outreach, as well as a panel that will discuss recycling options while away from home. This year, 12 expert round-table discussions will be offered on assorted recycling topics.
“The roundtables will give participants a chance to ask questions in small group settings about specific issues,” said Ilda Hershey, OKRA conference chair.
Continental breakfast, refreshments and a luncheon buffet are included with the $70 registration fee if registered by Sept. 14 or $95 thereafter. OKRA members receive a $20 discount. Students and participants ages 65 and over may pay an early discounted rate $15 or $20 after Sept. 14. Registration information is available at https://www.recycleok.org.
The conference also will feature various recycling-related exhibitors who will share information during breaks and provide door prizes at the end of the day. Finally, two concurrent options will be offered, including a tour of the OSU Recycling Center or a compost collection service workshop.
“The Recycling Avengers theme this year will look at fighting contamination in the
recycle stream and joining together like superheroes to produce clean material streams
from which new products can be made,” Hershey said. “So, Recycling Avengers protect
our natural resources while also stimulating the economy.”
The 2018 event is sponsored by OSU Cooperative Extension, OSU Facilities Management, Chickasaw Nation, Choctaw Nation, Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality, Cram-A-Lot, American Waste Control, Batliner Recycling, City of Stillwater, Covanta, Keep Oklahoma Beautiful, Natural Evolution, Inc., Republic Services and the SWANA Indian Nations Chapter.
