Registration is open for Feb. 13 North Central Oklahoma Summer Crops Conference in Enid

Agricultural producers in the north central Oklahoma region can pick up the latest research-based recommendations about a number of viable crop options by attending the Feb. 13 Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service Summer Crops Conference in Enid.

The 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. conference will take place at Enid’s Chisholm Trail Expo Center, located at 111 W. Purdue St. Cost is $15 per participant if pre-registering no later than Feb. 6 and $20 thereafter. Registration includes the cost of a sponsored lunch.

“Although we will be accepting payment at the door, we ask everyone to pre-register if possible as it greatly assists our planning for lunches, refreshments and conference materials,” said Rick Nelson, agricultural educator for the Garfield County Extension Office.

Brian Arnall, OSU Cooperative Extension precision nutrient management specialist, will kick off the conference with a session on soil fertility requirements for summer crops.

The following session will be led by Heath Sanders, OSU Cooperative Extension area agronomist, who will provide insights relative to the establishment of sesame.

A session led by Josh Bushong, OSU Cooperative Extension area agronomist, will focus on the establishment of grain sorghum.

Randy Boman, director of and cotton program leader for OSU’s Southwest Research and Extension Center in Altus, will share the latest research-based information about establishing cotton. OSU Cooperative Extension assistant specialist Jerry Goodson of the center will share ways to ensure good insect control while growing the crop.

The final morning session will be led by Josh Lofton, OSU Cooperative Extension cropping systems specialist, who will provide insights relative to the establishment of soybeans, including planting dates and maturity groups.

Trent Milacek, OSU Cooperative Extension area agricultural economist, will serve as the luncheon speaker and provide an economic summary of key summer crops grown in north central Oklahoma.

After lunch, Todd Baughman, researcher and program leader of OSU’s Institute for Agricultural Biosciences in Ardmore, will lead a dicamba herbicide training session for all Oklahoma applicators. While there is a fee to attend the rest of the conference and lunch, this afternoon training session is free of charge. Certified crop advisor continuing education credits are pending.
