Weeks honored with Award for Excellence in Teaching

Thursday, May 30, 2019

Penny Weeks, professor in the department of agricultural education, communications and leadership at Oklahoma State University, was recognized with the Award for Excellence in Teaching at this spring’s College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources Scholarships and Awards Banquet.

The award recognizes and promotes exceptional teaching by a CASNR faculty member.

“Dr. Weeks is always thinking about the bigger picture of education,” said Cynda Clary, associate dean of academic programs for the college. “Students cannot be spectators in her class, because engagement is how they learn. Dr. Weeks is constantly looking to learn about her students, and she is dedicated to finding pathways for her students to complete their degree.”

Since she joined the faculty in 2001, Weeks has been recognized as an outstanding teacher by faculty, staff and students, said Rob Terry, head of the department of agricultural education, communications and leadership.

“The level of experience, expertise and passion for excellence she displays is truly exceptional,” Terry said. “We are fortunate to have her as a teacher and colleague in CASNR.”

One of Weeks’ greatest contributions to CASNR is her role in developing the curriculum for the bachelor’s degree in agricultural leadership. She has also been instrumental in developing the agricultural leadership option for the master’s in agriculture degree program.

“I believe that great teachers and great students go hand-in-hand –– if I do not love what I am doing, then I cannot expect my students to love what they are doing as it related to the classroom,” Weeks said.

As an educator, Weeks applies her time and talents to create unique assignments that challenge her students to apply concepts taught in class and inspire her students to think critically. She has been recognized as a Teacher Fellow by the North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture, and several student organizations have honored her excellence as a teacher and mentor.

“Dr. Weeks’ teaching goes far beyond the classroom,” one of Weeks’ former students said. “Her office door was always open for me and any other student. I looked forward to our daily chats about the courses I was teaching or just about life. She always pushed me and challenged me to step outside my comfort zone and do more. Dr. Weeks is both my mentor and my friend, and for that I am extremely thankful and blessed.”

CASNR believes in the value of hands-on education and the importance of having a well-rounded student experience. The college’s award-winning faculty members are dedicated to developing students and are passionate about adding value to the total educational experience. With 16 majors, a variety of study options, plus more than 60 student organizations, CASNR is committed to expanding minds and inspiring purpose. Learn more at casnr.okstate.edu.
