Ayush Bhattarai wants to make a difference through food.

A good meal carries various meanings and powerful memories for those who enjoy it, and Bhattarai’s cuisine reminds him of home while connecting him to people from around the world. This is why he’s an aspiring chef.

As a graduate student in Oklahoma State University’s globally ranked School of Hospitality and Tourism Management, Bhattarai is making his dream job a reality.

“I joined the HTM graduate program in fall 2024, and it’s been a meaningful journey so far,” Bhattarai said.

Along the way, he’s making time for other unforgettable on-campus experiences. In November, Bhattarai competed in OSU’s Mr. and Ms. International pageant and won. He received a $500 scholarship prize while representing his South Asian country of Nepal alongside Ms. International, Pratikshya Paudel.

This summer, Bhattarai reflected on his OSU highlights so far, from his role as Mr. International to his involvement with the Spears School of Business’ experiential learning programs.

Q: What initially led you to OSU?

While I was looking for a university that matched my goals, I came across OSU and felt an instant connection. The Hospitality and Tourism Management program here is ranked among the top in the United States, which really stood out to me. On top of that, getting the chance to work as a graduate teaching assistant and as a kitchen instructor made it feel like the perfect place to grow both academically and professionally.

What motivated you to compete in the Mr. and Ms. International pageant?

I had taken part in a pageant back in Nepal, but that was within my local community. When I saw this opportunity at OSU, it felt like something special. It was a chance to celebrate diversity, represent Nepal on a global stage and proudly share my culture with students from all over the world.

What does it mean to you to represent both OSU and Nepal as Mr. International? How did you incorporate your cultural traditions into the pageant?

It honestly means the world to me. Representing both OSU and my home country, Nepal, filled me with pride. I’ve always had deep respect for my roots and a strong appreciation for this university. Throughout the pageant, I wore traditional Nepali attire and performed a cultural dance that really showcases the spirit of Nepal. I wanted to give everyone a glimpse into the rich diversity and beauty of our culture.

What do you like most about OSU’s HTM program?

Honestly, everything. The curriculum is strong, the professors are amazing and our department head, Dr. Brijesh Thapa, is incredibly supportive. One of my favorite parts is the two restaurants we have in our department, Planet Orange and Taylor’s. They give students hands-on industry experience, and I’m proud to be part of the team at Taylor’s.

Congratulations on your summer internship! What is your role?

Thank you so much. Right now, I’m working in the food service industry as a chef. I get to be creative in the kitchen, try out new ideas and bring fresh dishes to life. It’s been a great learning experience.

What are your career goals?

My dream is to become a chef and make a meaningful impact in the food service industry. I want to introduce Nepalese cuisine to a wider audience across the U.S. and eventually around the world. One day, I hope to give back by helping grow tourism and hospitality in Nepal and make Nepal a bucket list destination for people everywhere.

What is your favorite OSU memory so far?

There have been so many great moments, like exploring campus for the first time and experiencing America’s Greatest Homecoming. But winning the Mr. International title definitely stands out. It was such a proud and emotional moment, not just for me but for my country as well.
