OSU Regents address planning the Edmon Low Library's future

Friday, November 30, 2012

The OSU/A&M Board of Regents agreed today to begin the selection process for a consultant to assist Oklahoma State University in preparation of a facilities plan for the Edmon Low Library and additional buildings associated with the iconic building.

The facilities plan will address the most viable and efficient use of the library, the future library shelving facility and the existing Library Annex.

“The Edmon Low Library is changing both in function and appearance so it is important we step back and take a look at how we can best serve our students and other users,” said Dean of Libraries Sheila Johnson.

Johnson added the library is evolving from a storehouse for materials to a space for computerized research, individual and group study, and interactive instruction.

The library shelving facility, which will be constructed at Hall of Fame and McDonald, will house a significant portion of the library’s collections that may be digitized on demand and delivered electronically.  Construction of this facility will free up space in the library for other uses and streamlines the library’s function.  In addition to the new facility, additional space is already available for library functions at the current Library Annex located at N. Boomer and McElroy.

The Edmon Low Library opened its doors in 1953 and has remained the focal point of the OSU-Stillwater campus.

A recommendation for the selection of a consultant will be presented to the board at a future meeting.
