Hathcock Receives National Science and Math Award

Friday, November 9, 2018

Dr. Stephanie Hathcock, assistant professor in science education, is the recipient of the 2018 School Science and Mathematics Association (SSMA) Outstanding Early Career Scholar Award. Hathcock received the award, which recognizes outstanding early career contributions to science and mathematics education and celebrates exemplary program research, at the national convention in October.

“Dr. Hathcock epitomizes the intent of the Early Career Scholar Award,” said Dr. Juliana Utley, professor of mathematics education and director of the Center for Research on STEM Teaching and Learning. “Her research record continues to grow, and she is extremely deserving of this award.”

Hathcock joined the OSU faculty in 2014, and she currently teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in science education. Prior to earning her doctorate from Old Dominion University, she taught science and gifted education in Arkansas and Virginia. Hathcock’s research interests include teacher change, preservice and beginning teacher induction, creativity in teaching and learning and affective issues in science teacher education. She also serves as a manuscript reviewer for SSMA and associate editor for the Journal of Geosciences Education.
