CEAT Professor Awarded Prestigious Turner Award

Monday, March 5, 2018

OSU civil and environmental engineering professor, Kelvin C.P. Wang, has been awarded the prestigious American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Francis C. Turner Award.

Commonly referred to as the Turner Award, the award citation states that Dr. Wang has received the award “for international leadership in the field of transportation engineering research and education, for outstanding contributions that advance the knowledge and practice of pavement engineering, and for his applications of multi-disciplinary advanced technologies.” The Turner Award is considered the flagship award among several ASCE awards in the transportation area.

Dr. Wang joined the civil engineering program at OSU in 2011 as a chair professor. He previously served as a faculty member at the University of Arkansas and an engineer at Arizona Department of Transportation. Dr. Wang has focused his research on automated systems for pavement condition survey and is considered a world leader in this field. He has been supported with sponsored research by Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Federal Highways Administration (FHWA), National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP), Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT), and several other state and federal agencies. In the last two years, both FHWA and NCHRP provided Dr. Wang’s OSU team research funds to set standards on 3D pavement data format and pavement cracking definitions. In 2011, he was given the Frank M. Masters Award in Transportation Engineering by ASCE.

Dr. Wang has provided services to ASCE since the 1990s and was the past-president of ASCE Transportation and Development Institute for fiscal year 2017. He is invited to give the Turner Lecture as a part of the Awards Banquet in Pittsburgh, PA, on July 16, 2018 during the International Conference on Transportation and Development (ICTD). Dr. Wang is a past recipient of the 2017 OSU Distinguished Regents Research Award, 2015 CEAT Researcher of the Year and 2014 CEAT Research Excellence Award.
