The breadth of research and creativity in the College of Education, Health and Aviation and the College of Human Sciences was on display at the 2019 3MT (Three-Minute Thesis) competition on October 21. Four graduate students walked away with a cash prize, including winner Laurie Thompson, a master’s student in nutritional sciences.
A panel of judges selected Thompson as the first-place winner based on her presentation “Is There Iron-y in the Cure for Cancer?” Thompson, who is advised by Dr. McKale Montgomery, also won the People’s Choice Award and earned a total of $600 in prize money. She will move on compete at the university-level 3MT competition on November 19, at 3:30 p.m. in the Student Union Theater.
Tina Sergi, a master’s student in nutritional sciences, placed second in the competition and took home $200. Sergi presented “Policy, Systems, and Environment: Creating Sustainable Changes for Police Officers.” Dr. Jill Joyce serves as Sergi’s advisor.
Alejandra Barrera Curiel, a Ph.D. student in kinesiology, applied health and recreation, and Erik Dewey, a Ph.D. student in educational foundations, leadership and aviation, tied for third place, each earning $100. Barrera Curiel’s presentation was titled “It is about the Fall” and Dr. Jason DeFreitas is her advisor. Dewey presented “Using Games to Increase Classroom Interest.” His advisor is Dr. Mike Yough.
The 3MT is a professional development activity to help graduate students acquire oral communication skills for presenting their research and conveying its societal significance to lay audiences in a concise and cogent manner.
