When The McKnight Center for the Performing Arts first raised its curtains in 2019, Stillwater became a destination.

Oklahoma State University was put on the map for the world’s best performers — something that was all made possible 10 years ago.

In 2015, a transformational $25 million endowment from alumni Ross and Billie McKnight brought The McKnight Center to life. This year, the university celebrates a decade of artistic vision, development and excellence at OSU, which is the result of the McKnights’ generosity.

“I cannot express enough gratitude to the McKnights, whose visionary investment in the arts has had an immeasurable impact on OSU and its future,” OSU President Jim Hess said. “The McKnight Center stands as a true beacon of pride on our campus and is a testament to what’s possible when philanthropy meets purpose.”

Since its opening, The McKnight Center has become a cornerstone of OSU’s cultural identity. It has hosted dozens of world-renowned performers, including the New York Philharmonic, Yo-Yo Ma and Idina Menzel, elevating the university’s national profile and enriching the Stillwater community.

Beyond the breathtaking performances, The McKnight Center serves as a dynamic learning environment for OSU students. Each year, students can participate in masterclasses and collaborative projects with visiting artists, which are invaluable, once-in-a-lifetime learning experiences.

“The McKnight Center has welcomed some of the most exceptional artists in the world — names that often appear on the most prestigious stages in major cities,” said Mark Blakeman, Marilynn and Carl Thoma Executive Director of The McKnight Center. “That caliber of programming has not only elevated the cultural profile of OSU and the region but also gives students the chance to witness excellence firsthand. It’s a powerful reminder of what’s possible when access to the arts is prioritized.”

The McKnights’ gift was more than a financial contribution; it was a bold investment in the arts, OSU and Oklahoma’s future.

In just a decade, the gift has already had an immeasurable impact at OSU, and it’s just getting started with The McKnight Center standing to provide inspiration and entertainment for generations to come.

“When Billie and I made this gift, we hoped it would open doors for OSU and for the arts in Oklahoma,” Ross McKnight said. “We believed in the power of the arts to transform a community, and seeing The McKnight Center flourish has been an incredible experience. It’s truly a place that inspires, educates and uplifts.

“We’re honored to have played a part in its story, and we’re even more excited to see it reach greater heights over the next 10 years.”
