Dr. Raman Singh, associate dean for engineering at Oklahoma State University's Tulsa campus (OSU/Tulsa).

OSU researcher recognized by Department of Defense

Wednesday, May 6, 2020

Dr. Raman Singh, the associate dean for engineering at Oklahoma State University’s Tulsa (OSU-Tulsa) campus, and Dr. Pradeep Guduru from Brown University comprise one of six teams being recognized by the Department of Defense (DoD) as winners of the Defense Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (DEPSCoR) competition.

Singh and Pradeep will be awarded up to $600,000 over the next three years to continue their research on structural supercapacitors for onboard energy storage and delivery in manned and unmanned surface and underwater vessels and vehicles. The teams research is based on developing multifunctional materials that provide both load-bearing and electrical-storage-capacity capabilities.

Structural supercapacitors would allow vessels to store electrical energy to aid in acceleration efforts, leading to smaller engine sizes, allow for energy storage without any additional weight added to the vessel, and could provide additional safety from electrochemical reactions and possible sudden energy discharge.

“I am excited about this project and the collaboration between Oklahoma State University and Brown University,” Singh said. “Through an active partnership and support by the Office of Naval Research, we hope to contribute to technological solutions that aid national defense and security.”

The DEPSCoR competition is a congressionally-mandated, capacity-building program managed by the Directorate of Defense Research and Engineering for Research and Technology and is aimed at pursing science and engineering research in areas relevant to DoD initiatives supporting the National Defense Strategy.

As part of the DEPSCoR program, additional funds were also provided to each military service’s Young Investigator Program and Defense University Research Instrumentation Program as well as the Vannevar Bush Faculty Fellowship program. These programs are used to increase the representation of DEPSCoR-eligible researchers.
