OSU-Tulsa elementary education students graduate to Teacher of the Year accolades

Three Tulsa-area teachers are convinced OSU-Tulsa’s undergraduate elementary education program has some kind of “special sauce.” Not long after graduating, each of the former college classmates was named Teacher of the Year at her respective school. “OSU-Tulsa’s special sauce is being yourself. They taught us to love kids first, teach second and worry about the test last,” says Sarah Coonce, who teaches at Garfield STEAM Academy in Sand Springs. She was Teacher of the Year at her previous school in 2015.

Elementary education student selected as first OSU participant in Choctaw Nation Teach to Reach Program

Kaitlyn Wood, an elementary education senior from Paris, Texas, was recently selected as Oklahoma State University’s first participant in the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma’s Teach to Reach program. This career development program aims to provide support and professional development to Native American students who are seeking education degrees and planning to teach in schools with predominantly Native American students.

These students have demonstrated exceptional qualities of leadership, academic excellence and community service throughout their time at Oklahoma State University. Honorees were selected by the college’s Student Affairs Committee, and they will be recognized at the College of Education, Health and Aviation Excellence Awards reception on Friday, May 10 at 3 p.m.

Mollie Tully-Detamore, Oklahoma State University alumna, has received the Oklahoma Higher Education Reading Council Beginning Teacher Award. This award is given to a teacher in his or her first three years of teaching who is dedicated to literacy development and literacy integration in the classroom. Tully-Detamore was recognized for her efforts at the Oklahoma Literacy Association Annual Conference on the OSU-Tulsa campus on April 6.

Faculty in each of four academic units in the College of Human Sciences – the Department of Design, Housing and Merchandising; the Department of Human Development and Family Science; the Department of Nutritional Sciences; and the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management – selected two Seniors of Distinction for their respective units.

Michelle Rahn graduated from Oklahoma State University in 2008 with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education and a Master of Science in Teaching, Learning and Leadership, option in mathematics and science education. An 11-year teaching veteran, Rahn currently teaches science and gifted science at Will Rogers Junior High School in Claremore, Okla. Rahn also coaches an after-school science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) club.
