Secretary of Agriculture visits OSU Veterinary College

Oklahoma Secretary of Agriculture Blayne Arthur recently met with administrators at Oklahoma State University’s Center for Veterinary Health Sciences. Dr. Carlos Risco, dean of the veterinary college, and several members of his veterinary administrative council talked with Secretary Arthur about current and future collaboration in research and teaching. They also discussed on-going extension activities in partnership with Oklahoma State University’s Division of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources.

Older mares face reproductive challenges

We have tried now for two seasons without success with a stallion of proven fertility. My regular veterinarian told me that she may have poor fertility and be hard to get pregnant. Risco leads meeting to strengthen OSU Veterinary College’s One Health and International missions

Accompanying Risco were Drs. Jerry Malayer, associate dean of research and graduate education, and Ashish Ranjan, associate professor of physiological sciences.

Whetsel creates organization to help pets of domestic violence victims

Jonna Whetsel of Oklahoma City is a second-year veterinary student at Oklahoma State University’s Center for Veterinary Health Sciences. She recently established the Network for Pets of Domestic Violence Victims (NPDVV). NPDVV is designed to unite animal care resources with domestic violence shelters.

Veterinary Medicine in India

An agreement between Oklahoma State University’s Center for Veterinary Health Sciences and India’s Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (TANUVAS) afforded six students, accompanied by faculty members Drs. Lionel Dawson and Madhan Subramanian, the opportunity this summer to experience veterinary medicine in India. The group visited TANUVAS, Namakkal Veterinary College, a separate college under the TANUVAS system, and Sandynella, a sheep research station in the mountains of India. Among the students traveling were Rachel Dill, fourth year, and Laura Edwards, third year.

Biosecurity can keep beef cattle operations disease-free

This summer, Oklahoma and the country dealt with a number of disease outbreaks, including vesicular stomatitis, anthrax, and Eastern equine encephalitis. As most beef operations include horses, both cattle and horses faced potential threats. Disease outbreaks highlight the critical importance of biosecurity procedures on every livestock operation. We usually think of applying these plans and procedures to protect against infectious and contagious diseases, but non-contagious diseases should also be considered.

Womble participates in Research Training Program

Billy Womble spent 12 weeks this summer participating in a research training program at Oklahoma State University’s Center for Veterinary Health Sciences. Mentored by Drs. Andrew Hanzlicek and João Brandão, Womble studied clotting times in rabbits and the influence of how the blood sample was handled.

The Oklahoma IDeA Network for Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE) program recently announced its 2019 National Institutes of Health funding awards that include support for a collaborative study involving Oklahoma State University Center for Veterinary Health Sciences’ clinician Dr. Erik M. Clary and researchers from OU Health Sciences Center (OUHSC) and the University of Central Oklahoma (UCO).
