Enhancing animal and human health: Chemistry’s Pitre awarded NIH R35 grant

Oklahoma State University chemistry professor Spencer Pitre recently received an R35 grant award of $1,820,030 from the National Institute of Health that will support research contributing to the enhancement of human and animal health.

Psychology doctoral student awarded R36 dissertation grant

Hannah Appleseth, a doctoral student in Oklahoma State University's Department of Psychology, received the R36 dissertation award from the National Institutes of Health for her project involving the impact of smoke and vapor on children’s mental health. Appleseth’s project, formally named “Tracing the Impact of Evolving Environmental Exposure to Tobacco, Cannabis and Nicotine Smoke and Vapor Emissions on Children's Mental Health Symptom Trajectories,” seeks to analyze secondary data from the NIH-supported Environmental Influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) program to better understand the prevalence of childhood exposure to secondhand smoke and e-cigarette aerosols.

OSU student Brown brings art into STEM with dance-inspired senior project

Oklahoma State University arts administration student Leah Brown is using her background in dance to integrate art into the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, turning the well-known acronym STEM into STEAM. “For my senior project, I've developed an educational tour... designed for children ages 5 to 10,” said Brown, adding that the tour will take place at Oklahoma’s Pawnee Bill Ranch and Museum. “The whole point of the tour is to explore technological innovation and the way of life during the industrial revolution. I plan to do that through dance and movement.”

Alumnus Nelsen making global impact in machine learning and computational science

Dr. Nicholas H. Nelsen, a 2018 graduate of Oklahoma State University, has quickly emerged as a notable figure in the fields of computational mathematics and machine learning. His academic journey, which began with him receiving three undergraduate degrees: mechanical engineering and aerospace engineering from the College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology, and mathematics from the College of Arts and Sciences has led him on a path of success.
