Inspiring young minds

Emily Burris’ classroom serves many purposes: operating room, construction site, campground, superhero staging area. Her first-grade students measure paper “bones,” video conference with construction workers onsite and read stories about real-life superheroes bringing change to their communities. Burris, OSU alumna and instruction specialist with Yukon Public Schools, hopes the transformations spark students’ curiosity and desire to come to school.

New classroom writing tool through Google

Dr. Kalianne Neumann, OSU assistant professor of educational technology, learned about an instructional strategy for teaching English sentence structure to Deaf students, where students color coded the parts of speech. Although many classrooms have adopted Google technologies, there was not a Google tool to easily color code online.

OSU Design, Housing and Merchandising continues their affiliation by American Apparel and Footwear Association

Oklahoma State University’s Department of Design, Housing and Merchandising (DHM) continues its longstanding tradition with an affiliation recognition from the American Apparel and Footwear Association (AAFA). OSU is one of only 13 institutions to receive the affiliation status.

OSU announces new College of Education and Human Sciences

The Oklahoma A&M Board of Regents approved creating the College of Education and Human Sciences, combining the College of Education, Health and Aviation and the College of Human Sciences at Oklahoma State University. Pending consideration by the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education, the new academic college will officially launch on the Stillwater campus July 1, 2020.

OSU Tactical Fitness and Nutrition is a collaborative research and educational endeavor between the School of Kinesiology, Applied Health and Recreation and the Department of Nutritional Sciences. Led by Drs. Jay Dawes and Jill Joyce, the aim of this collaboration is to provide support for first responders and U.S. military personnel in order to improve their overall health, fitness and performance.

A passion rooted in aviation

Aviation runs in Josh Haynes’ blood. With a grandfather who piloted in the Air Force and a father who flew for US Airways, Josh was always around planes or listening to stories about flying. As he grew up, he developed a deep passion for aviation and knew he wanted to pursue a career in that field. The aerospace administration and operations senior started his journey at Texas Tech University as a psychology major, but he never quit flying. “I always found psychology interesting. But I was doing my flying on the side and having a lot more fun with it,” Josh said. “I made the switch and came here and fully committed to flying.”
