Lewis planting a future in medicine

It was no surprise that as Annagrace Lewis began considering college majors, she was naturally drawn to Plant Biology as she saw the versatility of plants from makeup to medication. With her eyes on a holistic medical career, Lewis expanded her knowledge with two additional majors. Now, Lewis will graduate this month with a triple major: Zoology, Biology, and her first love, Plant Biology.

Jones adds Orange Gown Graduate to slew of honors

Chris Jones of Edmond, Oklahoma, has left his mark on Oklahoma State University. He was named a 2019 Barry M. Goldwater Scholar, the 2019 Top Junior for the College of Arts and Sciences, a Niblack Scholar, a Wentz Research Scholar, a 2019-2020 Outstanding Senior, and also the Orange Gown Graduate for the College of Arts and Sciences.

OCEAN brings FOSSIL, experts and collaboration to OSU

Oklahoma State University created the Oklahoma Center for Evolutionary Analysis, or OCEAN, which hosts an annual conference called the Flyover State Scientists Integrating Evolution, or FOSSIL. OCEAN’s critical mass of social science researchers makes it one of fewer than five such centers in the entire U.S. where students receive training in and exposure to evolutionary approaches to cognition and behavior.

Students win awards at CAS Three Minute Thesis Finals

After 32 College of Arts and Sciences graduate students competed in the preliminary rounds and 13 advanced to the championship round, four impressed the judges enough to win awards during the college’s Three Minute Thesis Finals on Oct. 30. Ph.D. students Benjamin Nelson (Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics) and Erin Wood (Department of Psychology) tied for the win, with each receiving a $300 prize. Wood also earned an additional $300 as the People’s Choice Award winner. Sarah Elzay, a Ph.D. student in the Department of Integrative Biology, placed second and received $200. Meagan Bourne, a master’s student in the Department of Political Science, placed third to earn $100.

Oklahoma State University’s College of Arts and Sciences honored 25 of its most successful alumni Sept. 27 during the 2019 CAS Distinguished Alumni & Hall of Fame Ceremony at the Wes Watkins Center for International Trade & Development. Ardoth Hassler and Dr. George Thompson were both inducted into the Hall of Fame, while Brent Butcher and Maddy Cunningham were named Rising Stars. There were also 21 Distinguished Alumni recipients.

Given Oklahoma’s notoriously unpredictable weather, it might be no surprise that the Unmanned Systems Research Institute at Oklahoma State University is working with climate experts to improve forecasting. But it might be a surprise to learn that the institute and other researchers in OSU’s College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology and its College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) are playing a role in research on dolphins.
