Professor Emeritus at Oklahoma State University Receives High Ethiopian Honor Award

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Ted Vestal, professor emeritus of political science at Oklahoma State University, received the Knight Grand Cross of the Imperial Order of the Star of Honor of Ethiopia on March 3 at the Victory of Adwa Dinner. The honor is one of the highest Ethiopian rankings and included the formality of a dubbing with Imperial Court Sword on both shoulders by His Imperial Highness Prince Ermias Sahle-Selassie Haile-Selassie and the courtesy of being referred to as “Your Excellency.”

“It’s not whether they think we’ve won, it’s whether we think we’ve won.” This quote, attributed to Secretariat owner Christopher Chenery, has inspired Jordan Richards since his youth. Growing up as a triplet in Flower Mound, Texas, Richards joined the staff of the school newspaper in high school. It was there that he first got involved in photography, editing and graphic design. When it came time to choose a college, Richards followed his older brother to Oklahoma State University.

Tara Connor stood at the front of the room, presenting to dozens of communications students ready to network in hopes of finding a potential internship or job. Connor was the keynote speaker at this year’s Communications Networking Event on March 7. The event was hosted by Oklahoma State University’s School of Media and Strategic Communications. Connor, an OSU alumna, remembers the nervousness she had experienced when she was a student at the Communications Networking Event.

Mathematics Learning Success Center to Unveil Artwork

STILLWATER, OKLAHOMA – The Mathematics Learning Success Center will hold an art installation reception March 29 in the MLSC, located on the fifth floor of the Edmon Low Library, at 3:30 p.m. The reception will unveil the new piece of artwork created for the MLSC by Edmund Harriss.

Francisco’s support for first-year math students earns national attention

He rejects two of the most common ideas about his beloved subject: that math is inherently boring, and that it is inherently difficult for most people. The associate professor of mathematics and associate head for lower-division instruction uses his passion for the subject to help OSU students succeed across the university.

Teaching was not a subject Jenny Berry had contemplated when she chose to come to Oklahoma State University.  Born and raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Berry had not even anticipated going to college in-state until she visited her older sister at OSU.  “I immediately fell in love with the school, with the town, and the people,” she explained. “Everyone was just so friendly. I literally went home that night and applied.”

OSU Community Music School Helps Stillwater Students Flourish

STILLWATER, OKLAHOMA – The Oklahoma State University Community Music School launched its services in the fall of 2017. The school, directed by Meredith Blecha-Wells, offers youth programs ranging from choir to orchestra to a Suzuki Strings program offering instruction in violin and cello.

OSU Theatre presents “How I Learned to Drive”

The OSU Department of Theatre is driven by a vision for the community as it presents the Pulitzer Prize-winning play, “How I Learned to Drive,” by Paula Vogel, Feb. 22-24 at 7:30 p.m. and Feb. 25 at 2:30 p.m. in the Vivia Locke Theatre at the Seretean Center for the Performing Arts. For this production, the theatre department has collaborated with Payne County Youth Services to provide support for the youth in the community.

A Mixture of Cultures, One Vision for the Future

Sergio Mares found his way to Stillwater differently than most. Born in Eagle Pass, Texas, his mother moved back to Mexico shortly after his birth, where he spent most of his childhood. Mares returned to the United States in August of 2014, and attended Stillwater High School, graduating in May of 2017.
