OSU integrative biology team explores link between war and disease outbreaks

Four current and former Oklahoma State University researchers recently published findings that show a critical connection between armed conflicts and disease outbreaks. Former OSU postdoctoral scholar Dr. Mekala Sundaram, postdoctoral fellow Dr. Antoine Filion, graduate student Benedicta Akaribo Essuon and Department of Integrative Biology assistant professor Patrick Stephens published “Footprint of war: integrating armed conflicts in disease ecology”, which delves into how armed conflicts — including riots, wars or terrorist attacks — extend beyond immediate suffering by influencing the dynamics of diseases.

Billboard magazine names OSU a top music business school for second year

For the second year in a row, Oklahoma State University’s music industry program was recognized as a top music business school by Billboard magazine. The music industry program — which is part of the Michael and Anne Greenwood School of Music — is featured in the October 2023 issue of Billboard. The magazine selected its top music business schools based on the criteria of industry recommendations, alumni information and details requested from each school. OSU was listed alongside 41 other accredited schools, including Abbey Road Institute, California Institute of the Arts and New York University.

OSU receives $2M EPA grant to research enhanced aquifer recharge

On Sept. 21, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced that Oklahoma State University geology professor Dr. Todd Halihan, is the recipient of a nearly $2 million research grant to study the use and risks of enhanced aquifer recharge (EAR) to improve groundwater availability and quality. Along with his team of researchers at OSU, Halihan will collaborate with the Oka’ Institute at East Central University in Ada, Oklahoma, and Texas State University in San Marcos, to develop innovative monitoring and analysis strategies for rural EAR structures.

Oklahoma State University’s Gardiner Gallery of Art has opened a new exhibition featuring a group of internationally acclaimed Latin American artists. “Modos de ver/Ways of Seeing” was organized to coincide with Latin American and Hispanic Heritage month, as well as to celebrate the recent renovation of the Gardiner Gallery of Art, which was completed thanks to a gift from the Hearst Foundations.

Oklahoma State University’s College of Arts and Sciences honored 20 alumni at its annual Hall of Fame event on Sept. 15. Included among them were Bill Goldston, Charles F. “Chic” Dambach and Ron Ward — this year’s three Hall of Fame inductees. In addition to recognizing Dambach, Goldston and Ward, the college presented 14 Distinguished Alumni and three Rising Star awards.

English department hosts Japanese teachers as part of new language instruction program

OSU integrative biology team uses machine learning in newly published Ebola virus research

A team of researchers led by Oklahoma State University integrative biology assistant professor Patrick Stephens, Ph.D., recently unveiled critical insights into the transmission of the Ebola virus. The research team, which also included researchers from the University of Georgia and the Cary Institute of Ecosystems Studies, published the first comprehensive study of the potential host range of Ebola viruses including every mammal species in Africa. This study was led by Dr. Mekala Sundaram, who was a postdoctoral scholar in the Stephens lab at OSU when it was published.

OSU Department of Theatre to perform comedy play ‘Airness’ Sept. 22-24

Oklahoma State University’s Department of Theatre will present its first show of the season Sept. 22-24, 2023. “Airness” by Chelsea Marcantel — a comedy about competition, completion and finding the “airness” inside yourself — has been in production among OSU faculty and students since the spring. The play focuses on the character Nina, who is entering her first air guitar competition.
