Biochemistry and Microbiology double major Sergio Mares named an Outstanding Senior

Sergio Mares — who moved to Stillwater from Mexico at age 16 — will graduate with dual degrees in Biochemistry and Microbiology/Cell and Molecular Biology, along with minors in Spanish, Chemistry and Plant Biology. As if earning multiple degrees wasn’t hard enough, he also worked full time doing construction, painting and home remodeling during what proved to be a “financially stressful” 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Directory connects STEMM experts and diversifies representation

Frustrated by the lack of diversity on scientific panels, Department of Integrative Biology professor Dr. Elizabeth McCullagh set out to fix the problem in 2018 with the help of Dr. Katarzyna Nowak of The Safina Center and Dr. Jane Zelikova of the University of Wyoming. Together they created Request a Woman in STEMM, a database where underrepresented people in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine (STEMM) can not only connect and collaborate with each other, but also be called upon by journalists, conference organizers or others needing expert opinion.

American Studies grad applies diverse lessons to career

Ethics Bowl Team reaches quarterfinals in second appearance at nationals

Senior celebrates family’s history of Black women farmers through award-winning artwork

Studio Art senior Shyanne Dickey recently won OSU’s Division of Student Affairs Celebrating Black Lives Art Contest with her piece, “Reigning Black Women Farmers.” Dickey, who hails from Tucson, Arizona, ventured outside her normal medium of oil paints to create the digital print. The collage of edited photos depicts six generations of women from Dickey’s family who have worked farmland in rural west Kansas for more than 150 years.
