Oklahoma Higher Ed Hall of Fame honoring Jaco

Coming from a rural town in West Virginia and a family of miners and railroaders, William “Bus” Jaco never thought he would make it to college, much less have a doctorate degree, a theorem named in his honor and be inducted into the Oklahoma Higher Education Heritage Society Hall of Fame. Jaco will receive the latter recognition Nov. 4.

Oklahoma State University’s College of Arts and Sciences honored 25 of its most successful alumni Sept. 27 during the 2019 CAS Distinguished Alumni & Hall of Fame Ceremony at the Wes Watkins Center for International Trade & Development. Ardoth Hassler and Dr. George Thompson were both inducted into the Hall of Fame, while Brent Butcher and Maddy Cunningham were named Rising Stars. There were also 21 Distinguished Alumni recipients.

Given Oklahoma’s notoriously unpredictable weather, it might be no surprise that the Unmanned Systems Research Institute at Oklahoma State University is working with climate experts to improve forecasting. But it might be a surprise to learn that the institute and other researchers in OSU’s College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology and its College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) are playing a role in research on dolphins.

Ph.D. student researching moment when droughts kill trees

William Hammond, a Ph.D. candidate in Oklahoma State University's Department of Plant Biology, Ecology and Evolution has spent the past few years researching the moment when trees stop living and start dying under extreme drought. He is conducting the study under the advisement of Dr. Henry Adams, a professor in the department. They conducted a study where they imposed a drought upon loblolly pine trees in a greenhouse and observed them through different levels of drought-stress. The team realized the trees starts dying long before foliage turns brown. In a lot of cases, they were still green or yellow.

SMART scholarship helps recent grad succeed

Leo Reges graduated from the College of Arts and Sciences at Oklahoma State University in May with a computer science degree and minors in math and German. The SMART scholarship he received led to a job at Tinker Air Force Base right after graduation.
