OSU, OU scientists collaborate to sequence, map new genome

A team of researchers from Oklahoma State University and the University of Oklahoma published a genome sequence and chromosome map for the micro-crustacean Daphnia pulicaria. Researchers in the laboratory of Punidan Jeyasingh in OSU’s Department of Integrative Biology, in collaboration with the laboratory of OU biology professor Lawrence Weider, led the efforts. The results of their work were published in the journal Molecular Ecology.

Frustrated by the lack of diversity on scientific panels, Department of Integrative Biology professor Dr. Elizabeth McCullagh set out to fix the problem in 2018 with the help of Dr. Katarzyna Nowak of The Safina Center and Dr. Jane Zelikova of the University of Wyoming. Together they created Request a Woman in STEMM, a database where underrepresented people in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine (STEMM) can not only connect and collaborate with each other, but also be called upon by journalists, conference organizers or others needing expert opinion.

From physiology to endocrinology: A doctor's career journey

Dr. Erik Aspenson's career as an endocrinologist began at OSU more than 30 years ago when he earned his bachelor's degree in physiology. After attending medical school and serving 11 years with the U.S. Air Force, the father of four turned his focus to treating patients with diabetes and thyroid disease — something he's done in the Tulsa area for the past 15 years. Aspenson gave us a look into his life and career, including what drew him to OSU as an incoming freshman, the unique way he starts each day and what it means to be a Cowboy.
